Grab Unlimited + Vietnam Travel Pass — get both for one month. Saves ₹5–8k easily with 25–40% off on every ride. Cancel the subs the moment you land back. Public transport is nearly impossible to navigate — Grab is your best bet. GreenSM is a good backup to compare prices.
2 · MONEY
Avoid card payments offline — most shops charge ~3% extra. Carry USD or EUR from India and exchange there. 26,000+ VND per USD and 29,500+ VND per EUR is a good rate. Exchange shops (not airport) give great rates — shop around a little.
3 · ATTRACTIONS
Book online on official websites (BaNa Hills, SunWorld Cable Car, VinWonders, VinPearl Safari) — usually 4–5% cheaper than at the gate. For BaNa Hills and SunWorld: get the WoW Pass. For VinWonders/VinPearl: get the Tram Pass or Fast Pass if visiting on weekends — avoids brutal queues.
4 · SCOOTERS
Rent scooters whenever you want to explore freely. ₹500–600/day, or by the hour. Most are electric — 100km per charge, zero petrol cost. A great way to experience these cities like a local.
5 · VIETJET LUGGAGE HACK
Book VietJet via HDFC SmartBuy. The booking shows only 7kg hand baggage — but check your PNR on the VietJet website after booking. It often shows "GDS Free 20kg" automatically. If not, buy 20kg baggage directly on their site for ₹2–3k/bag. Do not take the bundled baggage option at booking — it's the most expensive way.
6 · INDIA FLIGHTS
Never use VietJet for DEL ↔ Vietnam flights. Stick to Air India or Vietnam Airlines. VietJet international is a painful experience — we know a couple who deeply regretted it.
7 · SHOPPING
For Coffee, Cashews, Chocolate and Vietnamese souvenirs — go to Lotte Mart or any big supermarket. Best prices by far. Local shops near tourist areas are significantly more expensive. Keep one dedicated shopping day.
8 · HANOI HOTEL
Stay in the Old Quarter only. Rooms are smaller and sometimes dated, but the vibe is unmatched. You can walk everywhere — Hoan Kiem Lake, Train Street, markets, restaurants are all within minutes. It's the single best hack to maximise your time in Hanoi.
9 · BAY & CAVE TOURS
For Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, and Lan Ha Bay tours — book through your hotel and bargain hard. Don't book online — hotels consistently get better deals and can personalise packages. We paid $70/person for Ha Long Bay via hotel.
10 · SIM / DATA
Jio or Airtel international roaming packs — both offer ~6GB data which easily covers 14 days with full usage (no YouTube/Instagram). We kept mobile data on the whole time. Simple, no fuss with local SIMs.
11 · LANGUAGE
English is very limited — even reception staff at 5-star hotels struggle at times. Download Google Translate or Apple Translate and keep it handy. The camera translation feature is especially useful for menus.
12 · INDIAN FOOD
Indian restaurants are easy to find in all cities. Expect to spend ₹1,200–1,500 per meal for 2 at a basic Indian place. Don't try to optimise — this is simply the going rate. Budget accordingly.
13 · PACING
Big attractions are exhausting. VinWonders, SunWorld Cable Car, Ha Long Bay, BaNa Hills — each one is a full and tiring day. Always keep the following day light — pool, spa, short walks only. We learned this the hard way at BaNa Hills.
